Those flying ants were everywhere that day!! I was wondering if they suddenly emerge from the undergrowth when the weather conditions are perfect or if we just don't notice them until they gather in numbers. I watched them sticking to the bus windscreen on the way home.

nice contrast of harsh and beauty.
I've never seen more than one flying ant at a time, and I'm sorta grateful for that.

Thanks as ever for your responses. We've had more flying ants than ever this year. They always take off in the early evening time. A few start coming up out of the nests, in the grass or edge of paths, then the next minutes there are hundreds, from a distance it looks a bit like smoke. The birds go crazy for them. Especially the sparrows and the seagulls. Some gulls come down to land and pick them off the shed roof and path. While many more are swooping in flocks above grabbing the ants on the wing. Its an itchy but interesting spectacle!
