Love the sense that we don't know if that person is arriving or leaving. Reminds me of how Jane Austen used to hide her writing in the drawer when she heard the door creak.
I agree with Annie - I think it is perfect that we don't know the cause for the shutting of the gate - it makes it more alarming in some ways.
